in the beginning...
Barely three generations have passed since the motor car first appeared on the highways of the world. Just over sixty years ago the petrol engine shakily and noisily announced its arrival on the British scene. It was an unwelcome arrival. Unwelcome, that is, to all save a few far-sighted pioneers, men who realised that the transport of people and goods at the end of the nineteenth century was appallingly ineffi- cient, falling far behind the advances of science in the fields of produc- tion and industrial mechanisation.
The business of using the common roads for fast, long distance travelling had in fact been the preoccupation of a number of men since the latter part of the eighteenth century, but it had been an exhausting battle against the heaviest of political odds.
The public and the legislators were for many years reluctant to allow mechanical transport on the roads on three main counts. The noise frightened their horses, the vehicles were held to be largely uncontrollable (which they were), and the enormous clouds of dust they drew from the unmetalled roads of the day were, to say the least, inconvenient. These arguments were valid until well into the first decade of the twentieth century...
