Anatomy Physiology and Pathology for the Massage
Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for the Massage Therapist
There has been a tremendous increase in interest in massage over the past decade, which has led to more and more colleges running courses. There are many generic anatomy and physiology books on the market. This is the first book to address anatomy, physiology and pathology, specifically aimed at the massage therapist. The book provides a solid base for the student and early practitioner to learn the physical make-up of the body, giving a broad introduction to the body's physical functioning. The emphasis is on the body systems and aspects most relevant to the dynamics of massage, such as muscle activity, stress response, tension and relaxation, and the effect of touch. This is the first book that covers the anatomy and physiology syllabus established by the General Council for Massage Therapy (GCMT) as the National Industry Standard for massage in the UK. Fully illustrated in two colours with beautifully crafted drawings, the book looks at:
Terminology.
Chemistry of the Body.
Cells, Tissues, Organs and Body Systems.
Movement Systems - the Main Bones and Skeletal Muscles.
Communication Systems - the Nervous, Endocrine and Immune Systems.
Maintenance, Growth and Repair - the Respiratory, Digestive, Cardiovascular, Urinary and Reproductive Systems.
Between them, both Su Fox and Darien Pritchard have over three decades of massage teaching experience, including two decades of teaching this material to massage students and creating training syllabuses. They are both leading practitioners, running successful practices in London and Cardiff respectively, and are involved with the Massage Training Institute. Su is also a psychotherapist, with a special interest in the interconnections of mind and body and Darien has a background in movement, flexibility and RhythmMobility® (rhythmic massage), combining massage with the Feldenkrais Method of movement awareness. Darien is also a delegate to the General Council for Massage Therapy.
